Aussie sporting trailblazer Josh Cavallo shocks partner with beautiful proposal at Adelaide United’s Hindmarsh Stadium

Trailblazing A-League Men player Josh Cavallo has shocked his partner by proposing on the pitch at Adelaide United’s Coopers Stadium home.

The Australian came out as the world’s only top-flight openly gay male professional footballer at the time in October 2021 and has since become a vocal advocate for LGBT+ rights.

Supported by his club since then, the 24-year-old felt it was only right to link his personal and sporting lives together again when he popped the question to partner Leighton Morrell.

The moment Cavallo got down on one knee was captured on camera by club photographers.

“Starting this year with my fiance. Mr and Mr Coming soon,” Cavallo wrote in a post on Instagram.

“Thank you Adelaide United for helping set up this surprise.

“You’re (sic) endless support has meant so much to me.

“You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible, and encouraged me to live everyday of my life authentically.

“It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started.”

Cavallo and Morrell received an outpouring of support from friends and fans from around the world.

The news followed Cavallo and Grace Wilson, who recently shared their non-binary identity, playing a leading role when Adelaide unveiled this year’s Pride jersey just last month.

The predominantly white outfield kit is complemented by rainbow details, including the numbers, while the rainbow design will be used for the goalkeeper jersey.

“I’m extremely proud to announce the new limited edition Pride Jersey to show the world that WE’RE HERE, WE’RE QUEER and WE ARE THRIVING!” Cavallo wrote.

“The lives we have changed together in this world is beyond beautiful. We’re changing this world to be a safer home for the LGBTQ+ community.

“Seeing the world react with enormous love in my coming out has helped so many people take their own step into their journey of coming out.

“This is why I chose to share my journey publicly, to help others feel that they’re not alone. I can start to see a future path aligning with the LGBTQ+ community and football community together. Together as one!

“It was a pleasure to meet the local Adelaide artist Mali Isabel who helped bring the Pride design to life. She’s is a queen.”

In February 2023, Czech Republic international Jakub Jankto – who now plays for Serie A side Cagliari – became the highest profile current male footballer to announce he is gay.
