As far as hairstyles go, braids are about as timeless and versatile as they come. They’re chic, they’re fresh and they’re convenient, too. They can help lift hair off your face and out the way when it’s muggy, rainy, or a little bit of both, they can protect hair from snagging, friction and styling, and they look stunning while doing it too.
Style-wise, they come in all shapes and sizes, from dinky and intricate, to straightforward and statement. The ways in which you can weave and plait are endless, which means options (and we love those).
Beyond aesthetics though, braids have a rich history of lineage, culture, communion and connection, particularly in Black and indigenous communities and the act of having your hair braided can provide a moment of intimacy far greater than a simple chop or ponytail. So alongside being a hairstyle, they’re a symbol of so much more.
