Her affiliation with Hermès and that namesake bag is arguably what she’s most renowned for, but she was also known for sporting a wicker basket to go about her daily errands. Iconic, we know.
From then, the concept of wearing basket bags as accessories came to life and they’ve since evolved from the rigid picnic styles adored by Birkin into the softer raffia silhouettes we all wear today. As the boho trend is seeing a resurgence, no doubt with thanks to Chloé’s latest runway looks, we can’t help but look to OG bohemian girls like Jane herself and begin to pull free-spirited pieces from our wardrobes (as well as inevitably shopping for new) that we know she’d approve of. And basket bags are the easiest box to tick.
When you think of summer bags or beach bags, they are the style that typically spring to mind. Often woven from straw or jute, appealing to those who wish to nail the cottagecore trend (and fill theirs with wild flowers plucked from the garden) as well as those who need a suitable accessory for going about their daily tasks (i.e. a work bag of sorts), basket bags are it.
Yep, in the same league as espadrilles, sandals, summer dresses and sun hats, basket bags sing spring/summer, and for several seasons now designer handbag iterations – like the Loewe basket bag – have sold out, saturating city streets and sandy beaches alike. So we suggest (if you haven’t already) hopping on the trend, because like Jane Birkin’s influence in the fashion world, they’re not going anywhere.
