The Juan Soto free agency sweepstakes could be nearing a conclusion. He’s long been expected to sign one of the richest contracts in baseball history, but the final numbers might be much bigger than many initially expected.
While New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has been trying to re-sign the 26-year-old outfielder, the New York Mets and owner Steve Cohen have reportedly been putting major heat on their crosstown rival.
A report from MLB insider Mike Rodriguez says Soto is sitting on a massive contract offer from the Mets.
“According to a very close source, the Mets have offered a deal worth over $730M for the next 15 years to Juan Soto, and so far it is the highest offer from any team right now at 12:20 pm,” Rodriguez posted on X (formerly Twitter) Saturday.
There are five publicly known teams still in the running for Soto. The Mets and Yankees have been joined by the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers. Four of these five teams have also submitted an offer of at least $700 million to the outfielder.
The Mets have been active in free agency over the past week. They’ve added Frankie Montas on a two-year, $34 million deal and Clay Holmes on a three-year, $38 million deal to supplement their rotation.
If this monstrous offer convinces Soto to go from the Bronx to Queens, there’s still more work to be done for president of baseball operations David Stearns. Another priority for the club is to address the situation at first base since homegrown slugger Pete Alonso is also on the open market.
