A woman was so “overstimulated” by the amount of wild things happening in New York City that she didn’t notice a major celebrity right in front of her.
Artist and educator Shayna Strype, 34, lives in Brooklyn and recently attended an animation workshop in the city. “It was one of those beautiful New York days where everyone was outside enjoying the sunshine,” she told Newsweek.
And, as it is in New York City, you never know what you are going to see next. In Strype’s case, it was a “dog dressed as the house from [the film] Up with a bunch of colorful balloons.” So, naturally, Strype shot a video—and only realized after the dog had left that she had accidentally captured Disney star and musician Joe Jonas in the clip.
The video has gone viral on her TikTok page @woosieparty, gaining over 104,000 likes and almost 700,000 views since being shared on October 20.
It shows the little black pug in his costume, including several brightly colored balloons, as Strype and her friend react to seeing this by shouting out “Yaaaaaayyy!” But, as the dog walks away, her friend tells her: “That’s Joe Jonas.”
And sure enough, the chart-topper is there, standing in the street in a brown outfit, also taking a video of the well-dressed pug.
First gaining fame through the Disney channel, Jonas and his brothers Nick and Kevin became international pop stars through their band, The Jonas Brothers. Twice nominated for a Grammy, in 2009 and 2020 respectively, the band split in 2013 and reunited in 2019.
Strype wrote on the video, “This dog blinded me to my brother Jonas,” and added in a caption: “Gotta stay focused on priorities out here.”
Strype said her friend had joked they were “so overstimulated” with “too much going on at once” that they didn’t notice Jonas at first.
She told Newsweek: “Joe Jonas posted the same moment on his [Instagram] story with us in the background saying ‘yayyyyyyy!’ looking at the dog.”
TikTok users loved it, with hundreds commenting on the clip. One wrote: “Honestly I completely didn’t see Joe Jonas in the video either I was too focused on the dog.”
“I love how he was also filming the dog,” another posted, as a third commented: “I had to watch 3 times to find Joe.”
And one comment suggested the million-dollar idea: “So if celebs want to go incognito they just need to hire some people to walk some cute dogs near them.”
Strype said it was “so funny and surprising” to go viral on TikTok, and added: “There’s always so much happening on any given side street in New York.
“I’m sure there are thousands of things I miss every day, but the dog was a real showstopper!”
