Wicked and Conclave led the Critics Choice Award nominations Thursday morning, picking up 11 nominations each. Both films were nominated for best picture, joined by A Complete Unknown, Anora, The Brutalist, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, and The Substance. The Critics Choice Awards’ 10 best picture nominees almost exactly matches the AFI’s list of the top 10 films of the year, with one swap—Coralie Farget‘s The Substance made the cut for Critics Choice, knocking out Jesse Eisenberg‘s A Real Pain.
While the best picture race has begun to crystalize, this year’s acting races continue to be as wild as ever. After winning best actress at the NYCC and LACC but getting snubbed at the Golden Globes, Marianne Jean-Baptiste is back in the conversation with a leading actress nomination for her barn-burning performance in Mike Leigh‘s Hard Truths. She’s joined by Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofía Gascón, Angelina Jolie, Mikey Madison and Demi Moore. Though they made it into the Golden Globes, nominees like Baby Girl’s Nicole Kidman, Night Bitch‘s Amy Adams, and Lee‘s Kate Winslet couldn’t crack the crowded lead actress category at the Critics Choice awards.
After getting snubbed by the Globes, The Piano Lesson‘s Danielle Deadwyler picked up a well-deserved best supporting actress nomination, alongside Ariana Grande, Margaret Qualley, Isabella Rosselini, Zoe Saldaña, and Aujenae Ellis-Taylor—popping up for Nickel Boys over tough competition from the likes of Emilia Pérez‘s Selena Gomez, who did land a best song nomination for “Mi Camino.” On the actor side, Hugh Grant made the cut for Heretic, joining Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Daniel Craig, and Ralph Fiennes. This means Sebastian Stan wasn’t recognized for either of his two contending performances, in A Different Man and The Apprentice. And after missing out on a Golden Globe nomination, Sing Sing‘s Clarence Maclin nabbed a supporting actor nomination here, alongside Yura Borisov, Kieran Culkin, Edward Norton, Guy Pearce, and Denzel Washington.
The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards will air live on E! on January 12, 2025, at 7 pm. ET, with Chelsea Handler returning to host the show.
