FORMER Fox News medical commentator Dr Kelly Powers tragically died at just 45 years old.
Tributes have poured in for the mom as she leaves behind her husband Steven and son Bennett – here’s everything we know about her.
Who was Dr Kelly Powers?
Kelly was born in Yonkers, New York, to parents Joan Marie and Joseph Powers.
After graduating from the Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, Kelly started her undergraduate degree at Baruch College in New York.
She then went on to begin her medical school training at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine.
The late star did a Master of Science degree at the University of San Francisco – leading her to become a hugely successful doctor.
Kelly soon became a regular Fox commentator, where she appeared on the network’s Red Eye talk show.
She was also featured in segments on Fox Business about the health risks that Americans are facing.
What was Dr Kelly Power’s cause of death?
Kelly said she first realized something was wrong with her health when she was hosting a live segment about heart health.
She said that she started suffering from chest pains and shortness of breath.
The late star consequently struggled her way through the rest of her segment.
In an interview with Preferred Health magazine she said: “It’s crazy – I went into heart failure while doing a report on Fox Business – live – on heart health and talking about the subtle signs that women often miss.
What is gliobastoma?
FORMER Fox commentator Dr. Kelly Powers has died of glioblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer.
- Glioblastoma (GBM), also known as grade IV astrocytoma, is an aggressive, fast-growing brain tumor.
- It invades nearby brain tissue but generally doesn’t spread to other organs.
- It can result in death in less than six months if untreated.
- GBM presents specific challenges that make it harder to treat.
- These include the localization of tumors in the brain, inherent resistance to conventional therapy, and limited capacity of the brain to repair itself.
“You can’t make this up.”
In the same interview, she said she was trying “to keep staying positive” in the face of her diagnosis.
In 2018, after doctors found fluid around her heart, she began her tragic health battle journey.
In July 2020, Kelly had a seizure and was diagnosed with glioblastoma – a rare form of brain cancer.
Powers underwent three surgeries along with chemotherapy and radiation and was able to push her cancer into remission.
But the disease returned earlier in 2024, with another mass found in her brain.
Her friends and family helped to raise almost $100,000 to help pay for an experimental treatment not covered by her health insurance.
After conventional treatments failed, she planned to travel to Germany for a groundbreaking and innovative treatment – but it is unclear if she did this.
Amid her tragic health battles, she and her husband Steven Doll agreed that they wanted to have a baby.
But Kelly’s cardiologist tell her she shouldn’t carry a child, leading the couple to choose surrogacy.
Kelly and Steven’s son Bennett was born in 2021.
The doctor’s mother said she was a “well-rounded” and “happy” person growing up who was always on the move.
Kelly’s obituary describes her love for her family, as well as her many hobbies, including “gardening, surfing, ballet, biking, running, horseback riding, and travel.”
