Doting dad alert! Eugene Levy loves spending time with his kids, Dan Levy and Sarah Levy, both on and off the screen. The Schitt’s Creek alum shares his talented children with his longtime wife, Deborah Divine, whom he married in 1977.
Though Eugene is known for cracking jokes alongside Dan and Sarah on the award-winning TV sitcom, the beloved actor revealed he was actually very strict with his kids growing up. In fact, Eugene told People he would “ground” his children if they acted up.
“It was a standard relationship,” he shared with the outlet in January 2019. “The thing was for us … if you crossed the line, there was going to be some sort of punishment. It’s the way I was brought up, and it’s the way I brought up my kids.”
Daniel Levy
Eugene’s first child, Dan, was born on August 9, 1983. After growing up in Toronto, Dan started his TV career as a cohost of MTV Live in Canada. Per IMDb, he then cowrote, cohosted and coproduced The After Show, as well as The Hills: The After Show and The City: Live After Show.
In 2009, Dan made his acting debut in Degrassi Goes Hollywood. He later appeared in 2012’s Cyberstalker, 2013’s Admission, 2017’s Robot Bullies and 2018’s Modern Family. He’s best known for starring in and producing Schitt’s Creek, which ran from 2015 to 2020. He appeared alongside Eugene as character Johnny Rose’s TV son, David Rose.
Schitt’s Creek is off the air as the series ended in April 2020, but Eugene, Dan and Sarah have an impressive list of awards to go along with their roles. Throughout the show’s six seasons, Schitt’s Creek won several Emmys, one Golden Globe and countless other prestigious accolades. While appearing on stage during the Emmy Awards in September 2020, Eugene marveled over the opportunity to act with his children.
“As a dad, getting to work on camera for six years with both my kids, Daniel and Sarah … [is] such a joy,” he gushed. “I love you both and could not be prouder.”
Dan made his directorial debut in December 2023 with the film Good Grief, a deeply personal project for him.
“I lost my grandmother toward the tail end of the pandemic, and I was in a very strange headspace in terms of feeling the weight and the profound sense of tragedy of what the COVID pandemic had done for all of us, while at the same time trying to honor the passing of someone who meant so much to me,” he shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the film’s release. “It was hard for me to feel the specificity of loss when all I was feeling was grief for so long. It was that conversation that really expedited the concept of the movie.”
In August 2024, it was announced that Dan and Eugene would team up to host the 2024 Emmy Awards.
“For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a literal quarantine tent, the idea of being asked to host this year in an actual theater was incentive enough,” they said in a statement after the news was announced. “We’re thrilled to be able to raise a glass to this extraordinary season of television and can’t wait to spend the evening with you all.”
Sarah Levy
The actor’s second child, Sarah, arrived on September 10, 1986. She was also raised in Toronto, where she lived before pursuing a Hollywood career. Like her older brother, Sarah also starred on Schitt’s Creek, appearing as waitress and cafe owner Twyla Sands.
In addition to Schitt’s Creek, Sarah has a long list of acting credits. So far, she’s been featured in Larry Crowne, Working the Engels, Best Intentions, United We Fall and All Rise. She acted in The Surrealtor, Distancing Socially and Patty’s Auto in 2020.
As for her personal life, Sarah is married to Graham Outerbridge. While celebrating her beau’s birthday in August 2020, Sarah shared a touching tribute on Instagram. “Happy, happy, happiest birthday to the best dang partner a girl could ever ask for,” she gushed next to a pic of the pair. “Guess I did something right in a past life.”
In July 2022, Sarah and Graham announced that they welcomed their first child together, son James Eugene Outerbridge, making Eugene a grandfather.
“Honestly, I could not imagine any other middle name for James,” she gushed to People in September 2022 of her little bundle of joy. “It was just a nice way to honor my dad.”
