What do customer service representatives do? And how about customer service managers?

Customer service representatives interact with customers to handle complaints, process orders, and answer questions.

Once you progress to the management level, you will be expected to oversee the daily operations of your department and lead customer service agents to achieve your firm’s goals.

The job can be carried out face-to-face, on the phone, over email or on online chat.

Some organizations offer WFH positions and most big firms have a range of full and part-time roles with flexible hours to suit your lifestyle

What pay can I make in customer services?

Your compensation will depend on the seniority of your role.

The average salary for a customer service representative is $42,950 per year or $18.93 per hour, but you may also receive additional cash compensation, such as bonuses, commission, tips, and profit sharing.

However, managers’ and directors’ salaries fall in the range of $89,228 to $115,430 with an average of $101,258.

What qualifications do I need to work in customer service?

While customer service jobs don’t always require formal education, many may require at least a high school diploma or equivalent, and some may prefer or require a college degree, depending on the complexity of the product your company sells.

However, your personal qualities are just as important as your education.

To do well in the roles, it helps to be good at active listening, empathetic and a natural problem solver.

Emotional intelligence, patience, conflict resolution and the ability to use positive language will also help build your career.

How can I progress my career in customer service?

The most common career route is to take an entry-level job as a customer service representative and train on the job to become a team supervisor, team leader then manager.
