Western Australia allrounder Ashton Agar nurses shoulder injury in brave one-handed Sheffield Shield innings

Australian cricket star Ashton Agar has braved a serious shoulder injury to bat one-handed in Western Australia’s second innings against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield on Monday.

The five-Test spinner and white-ball international allrounder was so hampered by the AC joint injury that he struggled to hold the bat with his bottom hand.

Agar bravely headed out into the middle at No.11 with his side 9-310.

WA added another 15 runs to the total with Joel Curtis and Agar at the crease, before the latter had his stumps knocked over by Sam Elliot (4-47) without scoring from five deliveries.

“Even the way he’s walking out here, Agar — his arm was in a sling yesterday. And you can see that left arm, the way he’s holding it, that’s not ideal,” Adam White said on commentary.

“Just the way he’s holding his arm, it’s borderline dangerous that he’s actually out there. This is extraordinary.”

Agar was hit on the hip twice, ducked out of the way of a bouncer, and even played a forward defensive shot to his opposite number, Todd Murphy.

Curtis remained unbeaten for 119 runs from 239 balls, a remarkable knock that included 16 fours and one six.

Prior to scoring 36 in the first innings, the 25-year-old left-hander had just one first-class run to his name after being dismissed for a first-ball duck and one run in his first two appearances.

Seamer Fergus O’Neill finished with 4-56, with spinner Murphy (1-87) and Xavier Crone (1-70) contributing with the ball.

In Victoria’s innings, spinner Corey Rocchiccioli became the second WA bowler in as many games to claim a first-class hat-trick.

Rocchiccioli took the last wicket of Victoria’s first innings and then struck with his first two balls on Monday.

Two weeks ago, no Western Australian bowler had ever taken a hat-trick in 77 years of history — now there are two.
