“So all we have to do is collectively leave full carts full of groceries at the self checkouts and they will get rid of them,” they commented on a Facebook post.

Consumers have voiced their frustrations with the new self-checkout policies that big retailers have implemented after a spike in organized crime.

Walmart has followed in Target’s footsteps by limiting the number of items consumers can bring to a self-checkout kiosk.

Now, in some stores, consumers can only use self-checkout registers if they are purchasing 15 items or less.

Many consumers are struggling to adjust to these new policies.

“I decided that the 10 items that I had we’re not absolutely needed in my house and that I could get them somewhere else,” one consumer commented.

“It was ridiculous even the self-checkouts were closed because they didn’t have someone to watch over them they only had a few open and two were actually manned and the lines were crazy so I just left the carton went home,” they added.

Other consumers disagree – one shopper said they still prefer self-checkout to the traditional register.

“I am very particular about how my items are handled and bagged,” they commented. “Therefore, I find self-checkout to suit my needs perfectly.”

Many consumers have pivoted away from in-store shopping to avoid the hassle that comes with new self-checkout policies at big retail stores like Walmart.

The self-checkout option became popular during the pandemic when shoppers wanted a no-contact method for checking out.

However, more self-checkout kiosks prompted a spike in organized crime.

Consumers – knowingly or not – were not paying for all their items.

Since then, retailers have been looking to implement anti-theft policies while also considering scaling back on self-checkout in general.

Walmart Self-Checkout Changes

Walmart’s Statement on Self-Checkout:

Over the past few years, the retailer has rolled out new Hosted Checkouts in a number of our stores. Associates working in the Customer Host role can show customers to available registers, help them through the checkout process and answer any questions they may have. This new checkout process is designed to help customers complete their shopping even faster.

For customers that prefer checking out with a cashier, Walmart will continue to have that option available for customers who prefer that method. Additionally, Walmart+ members have the option to use our mobile Scan & Go feature, which gives shoppers a contact-free checkout experience using their phone to scan items as they shop.

“As customers continue to change the way they shop, we’ll keep looking for new ways to offer choice while saving you time and money,” they wrote.

Meanwhile, there are at least three new changes at Walmart which have left some customers in a frenzy.

And Walmart has joined a popular fast food chain in an unexpected partnership to offer shoppers daily discounts on quick service meals.
