Twist in Bathurst 1000 crew member’s hospitalisation as baffling CCTV footage emerges

CCTV footage from the night of Erebus Motorsport’s Bathurst 1000 victory shows no sign of an attack on a crew member of the winning team, instead picturing the man hitting himself in the face.

In a bizarre twist, the vision that has emerged, which NSW Police are using for their investigation into the matter, appears to show a man throwing punches at himself while walking along William St in Bathurst’s CBD.

A woman appears to be cautiously following the man and then stops as she watches the man fall to the floor. He then gets up and walks out of shot.

Police say their investigation is still ongoing, but remain confident there was no attack.

They confirmed the man was out of hospital.

An Erebus data engineer was hospitalised in the early hours of Monday morning while celebrating Brodie Kostecki, Todd Hazelwood and the team’s win at Sunday’s Great Race.

Team members, including Kostecki and CEO Barry Ryan, believed the engineer had been the victim of an unprovoked attack.

Kostecki revealed the incident on Sunrise on Monday morning.

“It was a pretty good night with the team. Unfortunately, we had a bit of an incident with one of our crew members going into hospital, being attacked,” he said.

“But it was a great night for the team otherwise, and to get the win with my mate here, Todd, was awesome.”

Pressed on the details of the incident, Kostecki said: “One of our crew members was unfortunately attacked last night.

“It’s pretty disappointing and kind of put a spoil on the evening. So, we wish Sam all the best and hopefully he recovers fast, along with his partner, Tameika.”

In a statement provided to 7NEWS.com.au at the time, NSW Police said: “Officers attached to Chifley Police District have commenced an investigation following an incident on William Street, Bathurst early this morning (Monday, October 14, 2024).

“Inquiries are continuing and there is no more information at this stage.”

But police also said that, from their early investigations, there was a discrepancy between their version of events, and that of Kostecki’s.

So certain were they that the crew member had been attacked, Erebus were even offering a financial reward for information that could help the police investigation.

“I cannot believe there are people like this in the world,” Ryan told AutoAction.

“These young, innocent people were out celebrating a life achievement.”
