Legendary hairdresser Trevor Sorbie, a regular on This Morning, discussed his terminal cancer diagnosis on the show today (October 9).
Trevor was first diagnosed with bowel cancer five years ago. Last year he was forced to retire from his 60-year hairdressing career due to the side effects of his chemotherapy.
Now, in an interview that left hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley visibly moved, Trevor has revealed the cancer has spread to his liver, and he’s been told there’s nothing more doctors can do for him.
This Morning today: Trevor Sorbie shares terminal cancer diagnosis
Appearing with his wife Carol, Trevor, 75, said that his cancer was diagnosed after he “lost a lot of blood” one night, leaving him “unusually disturbed”.
“We got the news back in June that he only really had a few months, maybe six, back then,” said wife Carol. Then, after a scan in September, Carol revealed that Trevor was told “no treatment was going to work”.
“It all started, I’m going to be blunt here, but I lost a lot of blood one night and I was unusually disturbed about that. I went to hospital, they sent me to London and was told I had bowel cancer. I had a little panic attack and I looked at Carol and we were both speechless. So I went and had a big gin and tonic,” Trevor said.
“Then it spread to my liver, I had a six-and-a-half-hour operation. It came back, another six-and-a-half-hour operation. And there’s one, the big one, it’s still there now. The surgeon won’t take it out as it’s close to a major blood vessel.”
‘I never wake up thinking, poor me’
He added: “But the thing is, I never wake up thinking, poor me, I’ve got cancer and feel sorry for myself. I know I’ve got it here,” he said, pointing to his liver. “But I haven’t got it here,” Trevor said, pointing to his brain.
“I had a nurse the other day come out to assess me and I said: ‘Will I make Christmas?’ And she said: ‘I don’t know.’ And I said: ‘I damn well will. I damn well will.’”
Viewers react
This Morning viewers were left in tears over Trevor’s appearance on the show.
“What a remarkable man. Knows he’s got literally weeks left to live and he still has that outlook on life and can smile! Bless him,” said one.
“Christ I’m sitting choked listening to him,” said another. “Bit close to the bone this,” said another with the crying emoji. “Can’t watch. All the best to you @trevorsorbie and family. Big Love.”
Another added: “Lovely but sad interview with Trevor and his wife. What a lovely man @TrevorSorbie is during that emotional and uplifting interview on @ThisMorning with @BenShephard and @CatDeeley.”
“An incredible man with an incredible attitude, so sad to see his terminal cancer diagnosis. Be young, be foolish, but be happy. What a man! A genuine true legacy of a man,” said another.
