CITIZEN Kane, Casino and Vertigo are among the top movies that Gen Z have never watched.

A poll of 2,000 adults found 26 per cent of youngsters claim they simply don’t have enough time to sit down and watch classic films, even though they much prefer a night in (56 per cent) over a night out (16 per cent).

Many also admitted they haven’t seen all-time greats such as Apocalypse Now (34 per cent) and Airplane! (40 per cent).

In fact, twice as many Baby Boomers (79 per cent) have seen the 1980 American disaster comedy starring Leslie Nielsen compared to Gen Z.

While 27 per cent of younger adults haven’t managed to watch Indiana Jones favourite Raiders of the Lost Ark compared to just 11 per cent of Gen-X.

And only 10 per cent of Boomers are yet to watch The Sound of Music, with this shooting up to 24 per cent of those born after 1996.

It also emerged Gen Z are the least likely to think having a TV at home is important – along with those aged over 80, as 71 per cent consume most of their media via smartphone.

While 73 per cent feel with so much ‘must see’ or ‘must listen to’ media, it’s hard to know where to start.

A spokesperson for Lenovo, which commissioned the research for the roll out of its Tab Plus, said: “Young people are consuming media in such a different way.

“They are far less likely to watch on a TV and a classic blockbuster just isn’t the same on a smartphone screen.”

The research also found only 24 per cent of Gen Z could place the quote, “I see dead people” from the 1999 horror classic The Sixth Sense.

And just 32 per cent knew the origins of “I’ll have what she’s having”, while only 33 per cent recognised the famous line, “Say hello to my little friend.”

It also emerged music is now more popular than TV when it comes to relaxing among Gen Z, however 24 per cent only listen to individual songs, rather than albums.

The Velvet Underground & Nico (36 per cent), Led Zeppelin IV (35 per cent) and The Dark Side of the Moon (24 per cent) are some of the masterpieces which have been overlooked by today’s youth.

And while just 20 per cent of youngsters born after 1996 consider reading books to be an easy way to relax, 54 per cent of Boomers opt for reading to chill out.

Instead, young adults are more likely to watch YouTube (26 per cent) or play video games (26 per cent) than open a book when they want to unwind.

The research, carried out via OnePoll, found 93 per cent of Gen Z consider technology and devices important when it comes to helping relax – with access to entertainment, calming music and connecting with family and friends the top three reasons.

But 43 per cent of Boomers don’t think tech is an important element of leading a relaxed lifestyle.

Lenovo’s spokesperson added: “Technology is a huge part of our lives now and has an impact in almost everything we do.

“From entertainment, to work, to communication, modern tech has made life different in nearly every way imaginable.

“And to think, with all that at our fingertips, there are still youngsters out there who haven’t heard Rumours by Fleetwood Mac.”
