Today’s ‘Wordle’ #1,223 Clues, Hints and Answer for Thursday, October 24

If you’re aiming to maintain your Wordle win streak—or hoping to start a new one—Newsweek is here with all of the information you need.

Years after coming up with the initial concept, Welsh-born Wardle perfected Wordle during the COVID-19 lockdowns before releasing it to the public in October 2021.

Following its public debut, Wordle exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021, to 300,000 on January 2, 2022, according to figures by Statista. The New York Times purchased it for an undisclosed seven-figure fee soon after and it became the publication’s most popular game.

Each day, Wordle users try to guess a new, five-letter word and have six attempts to do so. Within these six guesses, you use a designated color system to find out which letters are present in that day’s chosen word.

If a player guesses a letter that’s in the right place, that tile will turn green. If the letter appears in the word, but not in the place the user has guessed it, it will turn yellow. If the letter does not appear in the word at all, the tile will turn gray.

Linguistics expert and Babbel Live teacher, Noël Wolf, explained that picking a strong first word was key to ensuring Wordle success. Players should try to include the most common letters in five-letter English words: E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, and N.

“Using these letters increases your odds of finding confirmed letters straight away,” she told Newsweek.

“Some of my favorite starting words are IRATE, SAUTE, ALERT, and TALES. They contain a good mix of vowels and consonants that appear frequently, giving you a solid foundation to build on.”

The next step is remembering that words do have repeated letters, and to consider doubles such as EE, LL, OO.

Wolf added: “It’s also a good idea to consider homophones, words that sound the same but have different meanings like, ‘there and their.'”
