Stephen King Accuses Donald Trump and Supreme Court of Lying

Stephen King has accused Donald Trump and the Supreme Court of lying.

The author, and frequent critic of Donald Trump, took to X on Sunday to speak out about the former United States president.

“Each of the three Trump nominees to the Supreme Court promised to protect abortion rights. They called it ‘settled law.’ They lied,” King said. “Trump lies when he says he will protect women’s reproductive rights. If you believe him, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you.”

Newsweek reached out to Trump’s spokesperson via email on Monday for comment. Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung previously told Newsweek King “is a dumbass” while reacting to a separate critical message from the novelist.

At the time of publication, King’s remark had racked up more than 455,000 views and over 1,500 comments. His post garnered a mixed response from X users.

“Thank you,@StephenKing!!! 👏🏻#WomensRightsAreHumanRights,” @MN_Momzilla said.

“It was a total scam on the American people. Complete dishonesty and gross lack of character,” @MyKarenas wrote.

“SCOTUS has been compromised….they make a mockery of justice,” @BlueSkywayruth chimed in.

Meanwhile, @akafacehots said: “Stephen King writing make-believe stories as usual,” while @TheGeneral_0 added, “Cmon Stephen King. President Trump used his constitutional right to select Supreme Court Justices. They were then questioned and ultimately chosen by the Senate.”

During his presidency, Republican Trump appointed Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Six of the nine current Justices were appointed by a Republican president, while the other three were appointed by Democratic presidents. The current court is largely considered one of the most conservative in decades.

Earlier this month, King claimed he had convinced Trump’s supporters to vote for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. On August 15, he wore a Harris campaign shirt with the words, “I’m speaking,” while giving the camera two thumbs up.

In a follow-up message, the “King of Horror” said: “Wow! MAGA guys and gals saw me in my Kamala shirt and immediately said, ‘Okay, I’ll vote for her!'”

MAGA, meaning “Make America Great Again,” is a slogan used by Trump in his election campaigns. Trump, his running mate JD Vance, and Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, will face off in the U.S. presidential election later this year. Last month, Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and endorsed current vice president Harris.

Americans head to the polls to vote on November 5.
