STEPHEN A. Smith told the Chicago Bears it’s time for a head coaching change after a disaster end on Thanksgiving.
The Bears lost 23-20 to the Detroit Lions after their unlikely comeback bid was brought to an abrupt end.
Chicago trailed 16-0 at halftime but launched a stunning second-half fightback.
But they were knocking on the door of field goal range in the final minute after a stunning fightback.
Quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked with 33 seconds to play to bring up third down.
But coach Eberflus opted not to call a timeout.
Williams instead heaved the ball down the field on 3rd and 26.
But the pass fell incomplete and time expired before Chicago could run another play.
Detroit held on for a nervy Thanksgiving win to improve to 11-1.
But Chicago was left to rue a terrible clock mismanagement which saw them lose a sixth game in a row.
And Smith was left furious with Eberflus for the way the game ended.
He took to X to say, “No timeout, no spiking of the ball.
“You get off just one play in the final 26 seconds.
“Is there any more proof needed for the Chicago Bears and their fans everywhere that a new coach is needed?” That it’s time for a change?”
CBS analyst Matt Ryan was livid on the network’s postgame show.
The former quarterback said, “This is unacceptable from the head coach position.
“Your responsibility is to not panic in critical situations.
“To put your team in the best opportunity to win games.
“That’s a massive, massive fail by Matt Eberflus.”
The Bears fell to 4-8 for the season and haven’t won a game since they returned from their win in London in October.
Chicago beat Jacksonville at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium six weeks ago to improve to 4-2
But six successive defeats have left them a log way adrift of their three division rivals.
