STEPHEN A. Smith couldn’t believe his ears during a back-and-forth with Shannon Sharpe on First Take.
The fiery personality and NFL Hall of Famer were debating the Dallas Cowboys on Monday’s edition of the ESPN hit sports show.
The Dallas Cowboys beat the Washington Commanders by a score of 34-26 on Sunday.
It was the Cowboys’ first win since October 6 and First Take debated whether head coach Mike McCarthy could save his job after the victory.
The discussion shifted to whether the iconic Bill Belichick could be McCarthy’s successor.
Sharpe and colleague Tedy Bruschi don’t believe the New England Patriots legend would get the job due to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Stephen A. Smith shared the thought that Belichick could benefit from Jones dealing with the media.
But Sharpe cut off Smith once he tried to reason with his colleagues and TV viewers that Belichick could enjoy working for Jones.
“Stephen A., do you like coming to your job every day and having a headache?” Sharpe asked. “See, you’re talking about what you think you know. One voice, one sound. When you’re trying to win championships, you have one voice, one sound resonating.
Stephen A. was left shocked by Sharpe’s strong words.
“And you and I both know, Bill Belichick is a bigger draw than Jerry Jones, that’s why he has coaches that he can overshadow,” Sharpe continued.
But Smith took issue with Sharpe mentioning the Cowboys and championships in the same sentence.
That caused Sharpe to seemingly call out Stephen A., appearing to say he doesn’t have the credibility to win football arguments with him.
“You’re argument goes right out the window when you mention championships and the Cowboys in the same breath,” Smith said to Sharpe.
“Now you know more football,” Sharpe replied with disgust. “Go ahead, OK.”
“Come on, Shannon,” Smith answered. “I never said I know more football than you. Stop that. Stop that. I’ve never said that.”
Sharpe was seemingly close to taking his glasses off in his displeasure with Stephen A.
Bruschi, meanwhile, was left without words throughout the sequence.
Neither Sharpe nor Smith has commented on the argument.
The moment was one of the few times that Sharpe appeared noticeably frustrated with Smith on the ESPN show.
Sharpe is a regular guest on First Take and is pals with Stephen A.
The NFL Hall of Famer joined ESPN last year after being the co-host of Undispute on FS1 with Skip Bayless from 2016 to 2023.
