Caleb Plant says he wants Canelo Alvarez, Edgar Berlanga, or Jermall Charlo after capturing the WBA interim super middleweight title on Saturday night with a ninth-round TKO win over #8 Trevor McCumby in Las Vegas.

Plant’s hit list
- Jermall Charlo: He’s fought once in the last three years, and he’s not ranked in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning bodies. When he eventually returns, he’s not expected to fight Plant.
- Canelo Alvarez: It’s reported that Canelo is going to wait and see who wins the October 12th undisputed light heavyweight championship between Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev. Canelo wants Bivol next May. So, if hie wins that fight, Canelo will target him.
- Edgar Berlanga: The New York native lost to Canelo on Saturday night, and he probably won’t be interested in fighting Plant. Berlanga can make more money fighting David Benavidez or Jaime Munguia.
None of the three fighters Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) wants are expected to fight him next after picking up the WBA interim title. That’s not even a real belt.
Being WBA mandatory would be more beneficial for Plant than holding the interim title because that’s not going to help him get a rematch with Canelo, and his performance on Saturday night against McCumby didn’t help.
Plant is under a mistaken impression that the WBA interim belt that he won will be elevated to the ‘regular’ belt, which David Morrell had held before he moved up to 175. What Plant doesn’t know is that the World Boxing Association has eliminated the ‘regular’ title as part of their reduction plan.
That means Plant will not be elevated to ‘regular champion’, as he’s repeatedly told the media. The only way Plant can become a true champion with the WBA is if Canelo chooses to fight him, and that’s not looking likely.
“Berlanga didn’t really win a round. He was on the defensive a lot. Yeah, me and Canelo. Me and Berlanga. Me and [Jermall] Charlo. I think those are three big fights that the boxing world would love, and three big fights I’d love to be in as well,” said Caleb Plant during the post-fight press conference, listing the short hit list that he wants for his next fight following his ninth-round knockout win over #8 ranked WBA contender Trevor McCumby on Saturday night.
The more logical options available to Plant:
– Diego Pacheco
– David Morrell
– Christian Mbilli
– Osleys Inglesias
– Sergiy Derevyanchenko
