It’s been a long time since the last new Onimusha game – 18 years, in fact – and fans of the series had all but given up on the idea of a brand-new entry in the cult classic series. Those fans have been proven wrong today, though, as Capcom has just announced a new Onimusha game.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword was just announced at The Game Awards with a spooky cinematic trailer.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is seemingly intended to act as somewhat of a reboot of the series, with new characters, fresh new gameplay, and some gorgeous visuals that look up there with some of Capcom’s best modern games. It remains to be seen how this game will be connected to previous games – the trailer is a little bit light on details – but it’s a new Onimusha game nonetheless.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2026.
Capcom stumbled into somewhat of a cult classic with the release of the first game in the series, Onimusha: Warlords, back in 2001 on the PS2, with the hack and slash game doing well enough to earn several sequels and getting near-universal critical praise. Subsequent entries were still received well, but sold much fewer copies, with the series effectively ending following the release of 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.
It’s had surging interest in the last decade or so, though, with fans replaying and re-evaluating the series, culminating in the release of a remaster of the first game on Switch, PS4, and Xbox One in 2018. While the remaster didn’t sell particularly well, it did seem to light a fire under Capcom, leading to the development of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
