Not too many people would classify the Los Angeles Dodgers as an underdog but longtime fan Rob Lowe isn’t everyone. The famous celebrity fan interviewed Michael Clair of MLB.com to discuss the Dodgers’ upcoming battle with the postseason.
He was asked specifically about all the injuries to their pitching staff and if he was worried about the playoffs. Lowe responded interestingly, calling Los Angeles a “scrappy underdog”.
“I mean, look at it. Big Red, you know, [Dustin May], who blew his arm out. He was gone for a year and a half. Yamamoto, we’ll see what happens with that. The Cat Man, [Tony Gonsolin]. Any two of those people, and that’s a devastating season-ending for most teams. I’m not looking for a handicap going into the postseason, but the notion that the Dodgers are the best team that money can buy, a super team? We’re going in as scrappy underdogs.”
Los Angeles has suffered plenty of injuries to their pitching staff this season and it has forced them to rely on players that they may not normally have. They are still one of the better teams in the league but the pitching issues could affect things in the playoffs.
Lowe believes, much like many others, that a title could put everything together for this group of players. Los Angeles is a World Series or bust team every year but with star Shohei Ohtani now on the roster, things increase even more so.
“100 percent. I think Andrew Friedman and ownership would agree. You look at what’s happened to us with injuries with the pitching. And as you know, the postseason is almost only about pitching. What Dave Roberts has been able to do to keep us, I think — what are we five games up today? — with the amount of starting pitching injuries we’ve had is, I think, really, really, really extraordinary.”
If the Dodgers can get some of their pitchers back and ready to go for the postseason, they could be dangerous. They are still waiting for guys like Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, and Gavin Stone to return.
Each of them gives Los Angeles a big boost in the starting rotation and would have the Dodgers feeling much better about themselves. It remains to be seen if the Dodgers will get any of these players back but their fate this postseason could depend on how injuries shake out.
