THE Washington Commanders have proven that the NFL is a cutthroat business.
The 2024 NFL season got off to a rough start for Washington, losing 37-20 at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
One player who had a game to forget for the Commanders was kicker Cade York in what was his regular season debut for the team.
Acquired via a trade from the Cleveland Browns on August 22, the former fourth-round Draft pick went 0 of 2 on field goal attempts from 47 and 56 yards out.
And while York may have converted both of his extra point attempts, this wasn’t enough as far as Washington was concerned.
On Monday, the team announced York had been released.
In his place, the Commanders reportedly intend to bring in another former Browns kicker, Austin Seibert, to replace York, as per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
As a result of Washington’s decision to cut ties with York before he’d suited up twice for the team, they will no longer owe the Browns a seventh-round Draft pick as a result of the aforementioned trade, according to DC area radio host Grant Paulsen.
The 124th overall pick in the 2022 Draft out of LSU, York played all 17 games his rookie season with Cleveland.
Cut by the Browns the following preseason, he subsequently spent time with the Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, and once again, the Browns before heading to Washington.
As for Seibert, he was selected in the fifth round of the 2019 Draft out of Oklahoma by Cleveland.
Let go by the Browns after just over a season, he played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, and the New York Jets over the next few years, along with a brief stint as a member of the New Orleans Saints.
Should he sign for Washington, his debut will presumably come on September 15 when they host the Giants.
While the Commanders will head into Week 2 without a win, there is reason to be optimistic.
Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels showed exactly why he was drafted second overall in his NFL debut.
The reigning Heisman Trophy winner went 17 of 24 for 184 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions.

“Overall, it went well, pretty well,” Daniels said of his debut.
“There’s some stuff that as an offense that we left on the field, we gotta execute better.
“But it’s a long season. We’re gonna move on from this.”
They’ll look to “move on” against a Giants team that emphatically lost its season opener 28-6 against the Minnesota Vikings.
