GARRETT Wilson had a seemingly depressing response when asked about his limited amount of involvement during the New York Jets’ Week 16 loss.
Wilson and the Jets were defeated 19-9 in a brisk environment at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
The Jets put together an impressive opening 99-yard touchdown drive with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers finding Davante Adams for the score in the endzone late in the first quarter.
However, New York wouldn’t record a touchdown again in the contest.
The 24-year-old Wilson had an underwhelming day on the stat sheet, garnering seven targets and hauling in six receptions for 54 yards.
Wilson was asked if he felt that he was open during plays in which he wasn’t targeted.
“I just put my best foot forward and see how it plays out, that’s all I can really do,” Wilson told reporters after the game.
“That’s all I can do. I feel like I ran good routes this game.
“I feel like I had an opportunity to help the team, but sometimes, it just doesn’t fall like that.”
The third-year wideout was also targeted just three times before the Jets’ final drive.
Wilson was then asked about his limited use in the Jets’ offense for most of the game, and he had a seemingly dejected response.
“I would love to be involved, love to make an impact on the game but if people see it differently, then that’s out of my control. Just try and do what I can do,” he said.
Wilson still is fourth in the NFL in targets (141) and fourth in receptions (94).
The former first-round pick is on pace for his third-straight 1,000-yard season with his drafted team.
Wilson needs just 13 yards in the last two games against the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins to reach that mark.
However, ESPN reporter Rich Cimini said last week on a podcast that he believes Wilson will request a trade away from the Jets.
“I talk to people in Garrett Wilson’s circle,” he said.
“They think, now I want to emphasize this is speculation on their part, they think he will ask for a trade after the season.
“Again, speculative, by people who know him. We don’t know that to be a fact.”
Wilson will be in line for a contract extension next season, but even he doesn’t know if his future belongs in New York.
“I don’t know man,” Wilson began to explain, per SNY. “I just figure—I just do whatever, you know, whatever. Go about my day however, be where my feet at, you know?”
“And if they do it,” he continued. “I would be blessed and that would be awesome. I love the Jets. At the end of the day, they were the first ones that believed in me.
“So yeah, you know. I can’t be worrying about all that. Just going to finish these three games the right way. But, I don’t know man I can’t be looking into all that right now, you know?”
Wilson will certainly fuel trade rumors with his recent comments.
The Jets have missed the playoffs for the 14th straight season and will be appointing a new GM and head coach in the offseason.
And it’s not certain if the team will bring back Rodgers in 2025.
