New twist as Adelaide explain decision to drop Josh Rachele after Showdown antics

Adelaide have dropped Josh Rachele for not having a “team-first focus” in a decision that has angered fans and confused AFL greats.

And in another twist to the ongoing story, Rachele liked a post on Instagram that suggested he was “hung out to dry” by the club.

The 21-year-old stoked the fires in the lead-up to last weekend’s Showdown, playing the pantomime villain when he jokingly claimed Port Adelaide supporters “don’t have many teeth”.

He welcomed the boos and issued a faux apology before goading fans on the field, pointing to his teeth while celebrating a goal in the second quarter.

Rachele was publicly backed by the club, but then news of his surprise axing emerged on Wednesday night.

The club on Thursday revealed the reasons on their website.

“We love the energy Josh brings to our group and he’s going to be a very important player for us for a long period of time,” Adelaide Head of Football Adam Kelly said
