A man’s bedside manner for his postpartum wife has gained him popularity online.
A video posted to TikTok by Rach Sullivan (@rachsullivan__) has gone viral after she revealed the reward she received from her husband after giving birth: a person hired to shuck oysters for her, bedside. Since the video was posted on September 30, it has received over 6.1 million views and nearly 550,000 likes.
“When my husband hired someone to shuck oysters bedside for me after giving birth,” Sullivan captioned the video. “Thank you to my man!”
Sullivan’s perspective wasn’t the only one that viewers got—she also posted a video of her husband orchestrating the surprise behind the scenes.
In the other video from her husband’s perspective, he spoke to the camera: “We are on a very important mission to meet this guy right here—the oyster man,” he said. “When all your wife wants for her first meal after giving birth is raw oysters on a half shell…you make it happen,” he wrote in the caption.
In the video, Sullivan appeared shocked at the effort. The “oyster man” also brought Sullivan grapefruit juice, saying he read that Vitamin C was important for mothers to intake after birth. With that, he began to shuck oysters at her bedside.
Some viewers couldn’t believe their eyes.
“I’ve seen a lot as a midwife [of] 33 years,” @hippiechickmama wrote. “This is a first.”
Others related to the instant impulse towards raw seafood. People are urged not to eat raw or undercooked shellfish while pregnant due to a risk of bacteria and viruses. Distance from oysters, or sushi, though, seems to make the heart grow fonder.
“My husband ordered a massive sushi platter while I was being moved from the birthing suite to the ward,” @shadowsgirlsart wrote. “If I could have married him again, I would have.”
“Omg husband of the year!” @leahmummeryk wrote. “My first meal out was four dozen oysters and champagne. Incredible.”
“My BFF brought me an Italian sub she made herself…and a huge coffee, and yes, it’s very much a reward!” @nightmarefairytale wrote. “Congratulations! It’s been amazing to see your family grow.”
For Sullivan, the reward was definitely felt. As she took in her first oyster—complete with cucumber salsa verde—she looked overjoyed.
“I’m so happy,” she said at the end of her husband’s video, through tears. “I’m so emotional. It’s so good.”
