This winter’s free agency period has the potential to be a league-altering time. There are multiple Cy Young pitchers available, including the 2023 National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell and the 2021 NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes.
The New York Mets will be in the thick of things when it comes to changing the outlook of Major League Baseball. New York is looking to change the course of its franchise and there’s not a more important time to do so than free agency.
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden suggested the Mets will be big time players this offseason, indicating the sky’s the limit for the organization.
“The Mets will be chasing Corbin Burnes and every other top starting pitcher on the market. They’ll be involved in the Juan Soto sweepstakes. They’ll look to bring back Pete Alonso while pursuing similar talents on the open market,” Bowden wrote. “If you’re a Mets fan, the second half of the season and the playoff run were fun — a lot of fun — but this offseason has a chance to be even better.”
When Bowden suggests this offseason could be better than the postseason run, he’s not kidding.
Obviously, if the Mets land Juan Soto, their offseason is about as perfect as it could have been. But even if they miss on Soto, owner Steve Cohen could cough up the money to bring in four or five star players instead.
It may not be bringing home the championship, but it would be laying the foundation to bring home World Series titles in the future. There’s nothing better than that during the dreary winter months.
