A 30-year-old woman has shared how she got more than she bargained for when she opened the door to salespeople—only to be asked twice if her parents were home.
Dagmar M., from Central Pennsylvania, answered the door expecting to be given a sales pitch or similar, but when she opened it, the man casually asked, “Are your parents home?”
Taken aback, Dagmar replied, “Uhh, this is my house.” Not long after, a second visitor—a saleswoman—also assumed she was a teenager and asked, “You look a little bit young. Is mom or dad home?”
Again, Dagmar clarified, “This is my house.” The salesperson, embarrassed, apologized and said: “Well, that’s a compliment!”
Amused by the exchanges, Dagmar captured them on her video doorbell and shared the footage on TikTok. The video quickly went viral, gaining over 1.5 million views.
“I was caught by surprise. I didn’t expect them to ask that when I opened my door,” Dagmar told Newsweek. “As an adult, people have questioned my age on several occasions. It always throws me off—I think I look my age!”
The video prompted a series of responses from viewers who shared their ways of dealing with unexpected callers.
“I just don’t answer the door, unless it’s someone I’m expecting,” viewer @orangecrush333 wrote.
Another TikToker, Sydnee, said: “I don’t open the doors for random people. I run and hide.”
“I’d just say no to get them to leave lol,” @jacquierubes commented.
“I always tell solicitors I’m the nanny, I’m in fact not the nanny I just don’t know how to say no to them,” a commenter named Holly wrote.
“I said no and they left. Worked like a charm,” TikTok user Amanda said.
Some commenters even thought it might be a sales tactic.
“Sales tactic they ALL say this,” said SmallerSpaller. “They’ve done it to me multiple times.”
Others found Dagmar’s story all too familiar.
“This happens to me so much,” wrote Kayla Sedita. “I hate it. It’s not a compliment when you’re in your 30s to be told you look 15.”
Though taken by surprise, Dagmar says she’s happy that her lighthearted video struck a chord with so many.
“Honestly, this was one of those videos that I personally found funny, so I figured I would share it on TikTok. I didn’t really expect anyone to find it equally as funny or for so many people to resonate with the situation.”
