Mia Goth Shadowed Guillermo Del Toro On ‘Frankenstein’

Although her onscreen star is continuing to rise, Mia Goth might be plotting her directorial debut.

While filming Guillermo Del Toro‘s upcoming Frankenstein adaptation in Toronto, the actress revealed she’s taken to shadowing the director during her off days, which has been a “vastly different” experience from her acting work.

“I’ve never done that before. It’s been interesting to experience what a film set is like when you’re on the other side of the camera,” Goth told AnOther Magazine. “It’s highlighted for me how vastly different the two experiences are. It really does feel as though, when you’re in character and you’re getting ready to step onto a set, you do enter another realm and crafting the scene starts before they ever call action. There’s a whole bunch of steps you can do to get you into a frame of mind where it doesn’t even feel like a film set any more.”

After coming off of Ti West‘s X trilogy with the July premiere of concluding chapter MaxXxine, Goth noted she had to switch off to “save my energy” after each day, whereas her work on Del Toro’s seven-month shoot is more of a marathon.

“Because acting is all energy, it’s a marathon. And it would be too hard to sustain that for the entire shoot,” she explained. “Frankenstein is a seven-month shoot, so not switching off is just not realistic. And it’s not necessary.”

After Deadline broke the news last March that Goth, Oscar Isaac (as Victor Frankenstein) and Andrew Garfield were cast in Del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, the SAG-AFTRA strike postponed production. When filming kicked off in Toronto back in January, Jacob Elordi joined the cast as Frankenstein’s monster, replacing Garfield after scheduling conflicts.

Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley and Christian Convery have also since joined the cast.
