She helped win the corner that resulted in Tash Prior’s opener in the 10th minute, and two minutes later her stinging shot cannoned off the crossbar into the path of Sharn Freier to head home.
After starring on the pitch, the veteran showed her class off it in the aftermath of the match.
Gielnik found three young fans in the crowd, one of which was holding a sign with the 32-year-old’s name on it.
Without hesitation, the veteran ripped off her shirt, signed it and gave it to the adoring fan, who couldn’t believe her luck.
She also posed for a photo with the young girl in heartwarming scenes.
“Thank you so much,” the young girl said.
A clip of the exchange was posted by Gielnik and the Matildas on social media.
Fans quickly praised Gielnik for the gesture.
“Em this is so cool 👏❤️”, one said.
“Em is the best ❤️,” another added.
“Could cry, this is a beautiful moment 💜”, another said.
“Fantastic this!! Well done Emily Gielnik, you’re a gem those girls will remember that forever ❤️🙌”
Meanwhile, midfielder Chloe Logarzo has been ruled out of Saturday night’s friendly after suffering a concussion.
The luckless midfielder, playing her first Matildas game since tearing her ACL against Ireland in October 2022, was forced off inside the first half-hour after a head clash.
The 29-year-old pleaded with Australia’s medical staff to allow her to play on and was in tears when she was replaced by Alex Chidiac.
Logarzo recovered well from the knock, but subsequent scans on Thursday confirmed a concussion.
Melbourne City midfielder Laura Hughes has come into the side as Logarzo’s replacement for Saturday’s clash at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong.
