A COSTCO member has been rewarded after making a hole-in-one on the golf course.
While making hole-in-one is impressive in general, the warehouse retailer was more appreciative of the type of golf ball they used.
Kirkland Signature, Costco’s private label that’s been around since the mid-1990s, makes a variety of merchandise.
In 2016, Kirkland Signature made its way to the world of sports and started offering members golf balls under the brand name.
It sought appeal through a low price point of $29.99 for two dozen.
For perspective, a pack of top-of-the-line tour balls like the Titleist Pro V1 typically retail at around $55 for one dozen.
That’s a considerable amount of money saved for casual golfers who don’t care as much about the brand name.
The member took advantage of the sweet deal, playing the Kirkland Signature golf ball when they made the hole-in-one earlier in November.
“Earlier this month, I got a hole in one with a KS ball,” the shopper wrote in a thread on Reddit.
Considering many golf courses and gear manufacturers offer gifts or rewards for a hole-in-one, given that it’s so challenging, the savvy customer thought they’d take a chance and reach out to Costco.
EXECUTIVE AWARD
“A lot of golf companies offer something complimentary if you make a hole in one with their equipment, so I decided to email the CEO lol!” they exclaimed.
To their surprise, Costco staff passed the email to Yoon Kim, senior vice president of merchandising at Costco.
Kim sent the customer a hand-written congratulations letter, thanking them for their support and use of the Kirkland Signature ball.
Included was also a free two-dozen box of more golf balls.
“Was not expecting a reply and was surprised to get a response and get forwarded over to the SVP who got my details and sent some KS balls and a note!” they added.
ACTION APPROVED
Several fellow Costco members praised the warehouse retailer for the gesture.
Costco membership sharing guidelines
Costco has strict rules for membership use that shoppers must follow and they’ve been cracking down on offenders in recent years.
- Primary Member Use: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. Sharing it for purchases is not allowed as the photo on the card must match the person using it.
- Household Card: Each primary member can add one free household cardholder who lives at the same address. This person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
- Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per visit to Costco. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by the member.
- Authorized Cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who doesn’t reside at your address. They will receive their own card and can shop independently.

“Costco rocks,” someone commented.
“HAHA Costco being a good sport!” another added.
“Dude. I’m jealous on both accounts,” a third wrote.
Current odds for the average golfer making a hole-in-one are about 12,500 to one, per American Hole-In-One.
For professional golfers on the PGA Tour, the odds are much better at 2,500 to one.
MEMBER MADNESS
While the kind gesture is likely to make waves among Costco members who are also golfers, many have been fuming lately over some of the retailer’s policy changes.
To shop at Costco, you must pay an annual fee for either the Gold Star or Executive membership.
Gold Star is the base level at $65 per year, while Executive has more perks and bonuses for $130.
For years, many have tried to “share” memberships to sneakily get Costco’s prices without paying, but it’s cracking down with new card scanners placed at entrances and ID verification required.
Some have threatened to “dump” their membership over the new rule out of frustration.
Others are crying out over a baking essential getting removed from shelves ahead of the holidays due to a mass recall.
