MAGIC Johnson has become an investor in National Women’s Soccer League team the Washington Spirit.
The Los Angeles Lakers icon, 65, has added the NWSL franchise to his already impressive sporting portfolio.
Since retiring from basketball, the former point guard has launched Magic Johnson Enterprises.
Through his company, Johnson owns stakes in the Washington Commanders (NFL), Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA), Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB) and LAFC (MLS).
He has now added the Spirit to his ever-growing portfolio, although terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
Johnson will now join Michele Kang’s ownership group.
“I’m excited to join the Washington Spirit’s investor group at such a pivotal time in the club’s history,” Johnson said upon the deal being announced.
“Partnering with a visionary like Michele Kang and her team to advance the growth of the Washington Spirit and the NWSL is an incredible opportunity.
“I’m excited to join the team and play my part to help elevate this organization.”
Kang, 65, bought the Spirit in 2022 for a then-NWSL record $35million.
She has since purchased European women’s giants Lyon, as well as second-tier English team London City Lionesses.
The Korean-American was effusive in her praise as she welcomed Johnson aboard.
“It is a great honor to welcome Earvin to the Washington Spirit today,” she said.
“From the basketball court to the boardroom, Earvin knows how to win, and we are delighted to count on his expertise as part of our fantastic investor group.
“His commitment not only reflects the strength of our club, players, fans and brand, but also sends a powerful message about the growth and impact of women’s sports globally.
“Together, we look forward to taking the Washington Spirit to new heights and inspiring the next generation of young women and girls worldwide.”
REACHING NEW HEIGHTS
The Spirit were formed in 2012, originally as DC United Women.
They won the NWSL title in 2021, and have featured several US Women’s National Team players.
Their current roster includes Trinity Rodman, daughter of former NBA star Dennis.
The Spirit are currently second in the NWSL table after 18 games.
Since Kang’s purchase, valuations of teams across the league have risen substantially.
Earlier this year, Willow Bay and Disney CEO Bob Iger bought a controlling stake in Angel City FC for $250million.
