Lebanese Parliament Speaker Accuses Israel of 54 Ceasefire Breaches

Lebanon’s parliament speaker Nabih Berri on Monday accused Israel of committing 54 violations of the ceasefire that ended the war between Hezbollah and Israel. He described the actions as “flagrant violations” and demanded urgent international intervention.

In comments to the Lebanese newspaper Al Joumhouria, Berri condemned Israel’s alleged demolition of homes in border villages, continuous reconnaissance drone flights, and airstrikes that have caused casualties. “Aggressive actions,” he said, must be halted to preserve the fragile peace and protect regional stability from further disruption.

Israel, which claims the right to respond to perceived ceasefire breaches, has not immediately commented on Berri’s allegations.

Later on Monday, the Israeli military said Hezbollah has fired into a disputed border zone earlier in the day, the group’s first reported attack since the ceasefire began.

The Israeli military reported that two projectiles were launched toward Mount Dov, a contested area in the Shebaa Farms region where the borders of Lebanon, Syria, and Israel converge. According to Israeli authorities, the projectiles landed in open areas, causing no injuries or damage.

Israeli military correspondent Yoav Zeyton said from his X account “For the first time since the beginning of the ceasefire in the north: Hezbollah fired at Israel, two missiles, apparently from rocket launchers in the direction of Mount Dov. They fell in open areas. No casualties.”

Drone Strikes Escalate Tensions

The Lebanese army reported that an Israeli drone strike on Monday targeted a military bulldozer in the northeastern town of Hermel, wounding a soldier.

Separately, the Lebanese Health Ministry said a drone strike killed one person in Jdeidet Marjayoun in southern Lebanon, while another injured one person in Bint Jbeil province.

These incidents follow Saturday’s airstrike in Marjayoun province, which Lebanon’s state media reported killed two people.

Tensions remain high along the border despite the ceasefire agreement, with civilians in affected areas expressing fears of escalating violence. Many have evacuated border towns, seeking refuge in safer areas.

Call for Ceasefire Oversight

Berri urged the technical committee responsible for monitoring the ceasefire to take immediate action against Israel’s alleged breaches. He called on the committee to “oblige Israel to halt its violations and withdraw from Lebanese territories without delay.”

The ceasefire, brokered to end a protracted conflict, took effect last Wednesday. Berri emphasized that Lebanon and Hezbollah have strictly adhered to the terms since its inception.

Allies and Broader Implications

As the leader of the Shiite Amal movement, closely allied with Hezbollah, Berri’s statements underscore the delicate balance of power in the region. The Shiite militant group has so far refrained from resuming hostilities despite the reported violations.

Berri’s accusations come amid heightened scrutiny of Israel’s actions in the region, with international observers urging restraint on all sides. The fragile truce remains a critical test of stability in an area long marked by conflict.

The ceasefire violations, if confirmed, could jeopardize efforts to maintain peace and rebuild trust between the parties involved. Lebanon continues to push for diplomatic pressure to ensure compliance, seeking broader international engagement in the conflict’s resolution and urging allies to strengthen humanitarian assistance to affected areas.
