THE LA Lakers have made a request for a major new rule change – just one game into the 2024-25 NBA season.
The 17-time champions started their campaign off with a 110-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Tuesday night showdown made history with LeBron and Bronny James becoming the first father and son duo to play together.
But new Lakers head coach JJ Redick was not pleased following the victory, complaining in his post match press conference.
First of all, he had issues with the number of 3 pointers his side missed in the first half.
More importantly, he had major problems with the BALL used in the NBA Opening Night clash.
The 40-year-old claimed it affected his side, and called for used balls to now be allowed during games.
“There was even some 3’s there in the second half that I thought were wide open and we just couldn’t knock them down,” he said.
“I’m going to send in a request to the league tomorrow that we can play with worn-in basketballs.
“I’m being dead serious.
“I’m not sure why we’re playing in real games with brand new basketballs.
“Anybody who has ever touched an NBA ball, brand new, it’s a different feel and touch than a worn-in basketball.”
Redick revealed he only found out about the ball issue while catching a rebound in the second half.
“I didn’t realize it until a timeout, there was a long rebound and I grabbed it.
“I was like ‘what, why are playing with this ball?’.
“Give the guys the opportunity to pick a good basketball.
“You think I’m joking but I’m narcotic.”
Lakers fan reacted with shock at his claims – but were impressed Redick’s level of detail.
They took to social media to hail their new head coach, who is taking them into a “new era” for the team.
One supporter said: “This man really a basketball geek, I respect it heavily.”
Another added:”Whoever suggested using brand new balls obviously has never played basketball before.
“Don’t know why you let people run the nba that don’t know about basketball.”
