Jerry Jones has been hesitant to speak poorly about McCarthy, but some have noticed a pattern about his way of speaking.

Recently, Jones made a statement that sounded like reassuring words for McCarthy.

“I’m good with Mike. I know how hard he works. I like his football mind,” he said.

“I know how good he works. He’s got, in my mind, an outstanding coaching record.

“He’s really good with the players. They think highly of him. He’s got a lot of fire in his belly.

“So, I’m just giving you this, I like the positives I see. And by the way, frankly, some of the best coaches I’ve been around, I got to see them when times were bad.”

That tone sounds like Jones wants to keep McCarthy around, but fans dug up a statement the Cowboys owner made about their previous coach, Jason Garrett.

“Jason Garret’s a good coach, let’s start right there,” Jones said at the time.

“He’s one of the smartest coaches and one of the hardest-working coaches. He knows this team better than anybody.

“When I, this year, decided to go with a younger makeup of the coaching staff, I felt strongly that we could go and do that, and he could be the safety net.

“So I’m glad to have him. He is the guy for the job.”

Garrett was fired just a month after Jones gave him that vote of confidence.

It seems pretty likely that McCarthy is going to suffer the same fate at Garrett after Jones’ most recent comments.

He is on the last year of his contract with the team, and despite a 45-30 record with the team will probably be on the way out.

McCarthy has yet to make a deep playoff run, even with three 12-win seasons, and is sitting at 3-5 this year.

NFL head coach annual salaries

1. Andy Reid – Chiefs – $20 million

2. Sean Payton – Broncos – $18 million

=3. Mike Tomlin – Steelers – $16 million

=3. Jim Harbaugh – Chargers – $16 million

5. Sean McVay – Rams – $15 million

6. Kyle Shanahan – 49ers – $14 million

7. John Harbaugh – Ravens – $12 million

=8. Dan Campbell – Lions – $11 million

=8. Sean McDermott – Bills – $11 million

10. Mike MacDonald – Seahawks – $10 million

With his quarterback, Dak Prescott, sidelined with an injury, that record is likely going to get even worse, and McCarthy is the easiest scapegoat.

Cowboys fans are certain McCarthy’s time is coming to an end after this season, and shared their theories on social media.

“This is JJ basically saying, I know we are out of it and since I am already paying MM this year, we are going to stick it out with him until the offseason,” one fan said.

“MM wont have to be fired. Jerry will just let the contract run out,” another fan said.

“Yeah Jerry is never gonna rip the guy in the media. I’m sure him and Mike are plenty done with each other,” a third fan said.
