Jerod Mayo Doubles Down On Patriots’ Drake Maye Reality

The New England Patriots were locked in on a determined quarterback plan this offseason as Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye marked a new chapter for the position in Foxboro.

The expectation for the duration of the summer was for Maye to learn under Brissett, who would take the starting job as an established veteran in the NFL. After watching both in preseason game action, first-year head coach Jerod Mayo left the door open for a competition for that job.

Entering the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders, Mayo reiterated his latest stance on where Maye can impact this season for the Patriots.

“I think early on (Maye) was trying to defer and just be a good teammate,” Mayo told Scott Zolak on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s pregame coverage, as transcribed by ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “Now, he’s competing to be the starting quarterback; he’s really kind of ramped up his preparation and production on the field.”

Mayo shared earlier last week that the Patriots should know their starting quarterback on Monday or Tuesday, regardless if that is immediately shared with the media.

Brissett and Maye have their final chance to prove their worth in game-action against the Commanders as the Patriots finish the preseason Sunday night.
