In the Masters of the Universe mythology, Skeletor serves as the primary antagonist, appearing as a skull-faced sorcerer determined to conquer the planet Eternia. The character is renowned for his distinctive vocal delivery, making Jared Leto’s interpretation particularly anticipated.

This live-action adaptation, based on the beloved Mattel toy line, experienced numerous delays and setbacks before finally moving forward. Travis Knight, known for directing Bumblebee, has been hired as its helmsman. Knight will work with fellow Laika creative Chris Butler, who directed ParaNorman, and who penned the screenplay.

This production marks the second live-action He-Man feature, following the 1987 Masters of the Universe film that starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor.

He-Man is currently experiencing a cultural resurgence. Netflix hosts a new animated series titled Masters of the Universe: Revelation featuring Mark Hamill voicing Skeletor. A third season, Masters of the Universe: Revolution, is scheduled for 2024. Our review states the animated series “uses the original He-Man sandbox to truly go wild and explore these characters in ways that allow them to break tired molds and dissolve old conventions.”
