The Tigers are on fire heading into the Frisco Bowl. Memphis finished the regular season on a three-game winning streak, capping it off with a massive 34-24 upset over Tulane on Nov. 28. They spoiled Tulane’s undefeated AAC season while proving that they can deliver in big moments.
Memphis QB Seth Henigan had a historic season, throwing 2 touchdown passes in the Tulane upset to become the AAC’s all-time leading passer with 13,972 career yards. The Tigers RB Mario Anderson has been a workhorse, rushing for 1,292 yards this season, good for second in the conference. He added 177 yards and a TD against Tulane and will look to feast on West Virginia’s struggling defense.
Memphis will appear in its 10th straight bowl game, and they’ll look to build on last year’s 36-26 Liberty Bowl win over Iowa State. The Tigers have momentum, history, and confidence on their side.
On the other side, It’s been an up-and-down season for the Mountaineers, who finished eighth in the Big 12 after a rocky final stretch. West Virginia lost 2 of its last 3 games and gave up a whopping 40.8 points per game over that span. Their season finale was particularly rough—a 52-15 blowout loss to Texas Tech, where turnovers and defensive lapses proved costly.
West Virginia RB Jahiem White was a bright spot in the Texas Tech loss, racking up 124 rushing yards and a TD. The Mountaineers will rely heavily on his explosiveness to keep Memphis on their toes. QB Garrett Greene: Greene will look to bounce back after throwing 2 interceptions in the season finale. A clean performance will be critical for West Virginia to keep pace with Memphis’ high-powered offense.
Despite their struggles, West Virginia is no stranger to bowl success. They’re making their third bowl appearance in four seasons and dominated North Carolina 30-10 in last year’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
