Georgia Southern is rolling into New Orleans with momentum after winning three of their last four games and will enter the bowl game with minimal opt-outs or transfer portal losses.
The Eagles picked up wins over bowl teams James Madison, Marshall, and South Alabama, proving they can hang with tough competition. Meanwhile, their offense has been electric, and they’ll look to take advantage of a Sam Houston defense that’s been hit hard by opt-outs.
It’s a historic moment for the Bearkats as they prepare for their first FBS bowl game, but the road to New Orleans hasn’t been smooth. Head coach K.C. Keeler has taken the Temple job, leaving offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen to steer the ship.
Adding to the challenge, the Bearkats are dealing with a wave of opt-outs including their leading rusher Jay Ducker, who won’t suit up, and defensive backs Isaiah Cash and David Fisher are also out, leaving big gaps in a secondary that’s been a strength all season.
Despite the absences, Sam Houston’s defense was a force during the season, allowing just 115.6 total yards and 20.0 points per game. However, with key players missing, those numbers could take a hit against Georgia Southern’s potent attack.
