The producers of the Oscars ceremony were concerned about receiving penalties from the FCC and facing possible grievances from viewers. Therefore, they made extensive efforts to ensure that John Cena‘s, private parts did not make an appearance during the live broadcast. However, they still managed to maintain the illusion that the actor was completely naked behind the envelope.
Created as an homage to the streaker who gained notoriety for interrupting the Academy Awards show 50 years ago, the concept for the intermission skit was that Cena was having doubts about presenting the award for Costuming while being nude. Eventually, Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel convinced Cena to come on stage, where the muscular actor and former wrestler “sported” only the envelope holding the name of the winner (along with some Birkenstocks).
In an interview with Variety, Rob Mills, the Executive Vice President of Unscripted and Alternative Entertainment for Walt Disney Television, shared insights on how they carefully selected John Cena’s wardrobe to adhere to Standards & Practices regulations.
“A bulge cannot be showing, and you can’t show crack,” Mills explained. There was also the concern of “’What happens if he drops that card?’ So we made sure that, for all intents and purposes, he looked like a Ken doll up front. His crack was covered in the back, and then the envelope was Velcro’d on there so it wouldn’t fall. But beyond that, he was naked.”
According to Molly McNearney, executive producer of the Oscars and co-head writer on her husband Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show on ABC, the team reached a point where everyone was satisfied, and it did not affect the humor in any way. This was also approved by S&P.
She expressed gratitude that they didn’t have to send him out in his briefs, a choice that she believed legal would have favored.
