A BELOVED grocery store is closing its doors after 87 years.

Walt’s Food Centers will shutter its flagship store in Chicago on September 28.

The owner said that the decision was a tough one – and that it was due to the condition of the store itself.

“This decision was not made lightly and was influenced by the current market conditions and the significant investment that would be required to improve and maintain our aging facility,” a letter posted outside the store said.

The company is working to relocate its workers to other locations of the grocery chain.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support and loyalty you have shown us over the years,” the message said.

“It has been our honor to serve you and your families for many generations.”

Members of the community have been left heartbroken by news of the closure as shoppers shared their reactions on social media.
