The San Francisco Giants have a pivotal offseason ahead that could finally put the floundering franchise in a solid position to compete.
Unfortunately, last winter’s exciting signings of Blake Snell and Matt Chapman weren’t enough to see the Giants return to the postseason for the first time since 2021.
With San Francisco legend Buster Posey running the show, things should be different going forward. Perhaps one of this winter’s top free-agent sluggers will be signed to help the Giants turn around efforts in 2025.
“Contrariwise, I could envision Buster Posey looking at (Pete) Alonso’s track record and seeing him as a big-time run producer with the kind of raw strength needed to make an impact in San Francisco’s ballpark,” CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson wrote Thursday when discussing where Alonso might sign this winter.
Alonso has batted .249 with 375 extra-base hits including 226 home runs, 586 RBIs and a .853 OPS throughout his six-season career with the New York Mets.
“I could see the new front office overpaying to get the top pure power hitter on the free agent market,” CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa stated following Anderson’s comments regarding Alonso’s future.
After posting a respectable 2024 campaign that ended with Alonso helping lead the Mets to Game 6 of the National League Championship Series against the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, the Mets slugger is a free agent for the first time.
The 29-year-old’s postseason heroics increased his stock, estimated at roughly $242 million over a seven-year deal, translating to nearly $35 million annually, according to Spotrac.
Not only will Alonso provide the Giants with a consistent bat that belts 30-to-40 home runs annually but he’ll also be an excellent leader for a young and inexperienced San Francisco roster.
It’ll be interesting to see how aggressively Posey pursues the Mets’ first baseman this winter as he looks to revive the Giants franchise.
