After spending six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, Paul Goldschmidt is searching for a new home.
FanSided’s MLB Insider Robert Murray projects that Goldschmidt could be headed back to the NL West — as a member of the San Francisco Giants.
The Giants started their offseason with a bang by signing shortstop Willy Adames to a seven-year contract for $182 million. It’s clear San Francisco is looking to try to make big splashes to compete with its rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Goldschmidt isn’t the Silver Slugger he once was, but he can still put the ball in play. Last season with the Cardinals, he hit 22 home runs and recorded 65 RBI. To put that into perspective, only Matt Chapman hit more home runs for the Giants in 2024 with 27. Murray provided even more insight on why Goldschmidt would be a good fit.
“The .839 OPS against left-handed pitching he had would’ve ranked among the club leaders as well,” wrote Murray. “To top it all off, he has a 1.015 OPS in 84 games in San Francisco over the course of his career. He sees the ball incredibly well at what’s widely viewed as a pitcher’s park.”
Defensively, he is right around the league average. Goldschmidt won’t make the spectacular plays as often as he did in his prime, but he won’t be a liability on the right side of the infield.
If the Giants were to go out and bring in Goldschmidt, his cost would be a fraction of what he was paid last season. He was paid $26 million last year by St. Louis, and his market value is just less than half of his salary from a year ago. However, he would still provide good value for a team looking to improve in the NL West.
