AN EXCEPTIONALLY rare Porsche sports car that has “never been driven” has hit auction for a whopping $3.4 million.
The breathtaking car could “hardly offer a better opportunity” to enthusiasts to own a pristine example, according to the listing.
The 918 ‘Weissach’ Spyder model was first produced in 2013 as an experimental plug-in hybrid hypercar.
It features an “earth-shaking” V8 engine borrowed from the RS Spyder LMP2 Le Mans Prototype.
This is supported by pair of powerful electric motors – one bound to the engine itself and another incorporated into the front axle.
Altogether, these combine to offer a whopping 887 horsepower and 944 pound-feet of torque, which is channelled through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Owners can also choose from a range of five different driving modes, including a short-range all-electric capability and a performance-boosting “hot lap” mode.
To match its name, only 918 examples were ever built.
This particular offering is among the first, with chassis number 67, and is part of a limited edition group.
Of the batch of 918, only 297 were completed to US specifications – and this is one of them.
It also boasts the “ultra-desirable” Weissach package, which trimmed weight off the standard edition with features like magnesium alloy wheels and titanium chassis elements.
Amazingly, the car has barely been driven, with only 170 miles on the odometer.
That averages out to just under 19 miles annually since it was built in 2015.
However, much of this mileage is understood to be made up of transport to and from dealerships and services thanks to its very short ownership chain.
Owner’s manuals, service history and six-point racing harnesses are all included in the lot.
The Spyder is now up for auction in Las Vegas, NV through RM Sotheby’s.
The listing states: “Over the course of its seven-plus-decade history, Porsche has consistently crafted automobiles at the cutting edge of performance and technology.
“In 2013 the automaker unveiled another benchmark of engineering superiority with the Porsche 918 Spyder, which introduced state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid-electric technology to elevate performance while increasing efficiency.
“The 918 Spyder’s performance is nothing short of extraordinary, as the sprint from standstill to 60 mph takes less than 2.5 seconds, making the Porsche quicker than both of its contemporary hybrid hypercar rivals, the Ferrari LaFerrari and the McLaren P1.
“As one of just 297 spyders specified for the United States, this exquisite 918 “Weissach” Spyder boasts a level of rarity that, in combination with extremely low mileage and desirable options, results in a bellwether example of the venerable hypercar.
“For Porsche collectors, supercar enthusiasts, and pursuers of the best low-mileage hypercar examples in the market, serial number 067 could hardly offer a better opportunity.”
The car will be sold at RM Sotheby’s Vegas event on November 22 and is expected to fetch up to $3.5 million.
