A CURRENCY expert has shared the exact error to keep your eyes peeled for on a $5 bill that makes it worth over $40,000.
The error makes the bill seem fake, but its $44,000 value is undeniably real.
Eric Miller runs The Coin Channel (@thecoinchannel), a TikTok page with 4.7 million followers that shares rare coins and notes.
In a video from Tuesday, Miller detailed one of the most expensive $5 bills he had seen in “a very, very long time.”
The currency expert said he took a look at the bill, but it wasn’t immediately apparent why it sold for five figures.
“I checked out the entire front of the bill,” said Miller. “I don’t see anything that’s different other than the fact it’s from 1934.”
He pointed out that the serial number was normal and there were no visible errors.
“Well, I looked into it and I know exactly what happened,” said Miller.
The currency expert shared that the bill’s immense value stemmed from an error on its back side.
“When I looked at the reverse, I thought I was looking at a different bill,” he said.
Miller showed the back of the $5 bill, which had been printed with the reverse of a $10 bill.
He noted the printing mishap was called a double denomination error.
“Immediately people would think that was fake,” he said. “But it’s real and made someone a lot of money.”
The $5 bill sold for an astounding $44,400 – 8,880 times its face value.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Check your wallet for a $20 note as well, because your bill could be worth up to $55,000.
In another TikTok video, Miller advised his followers to look for $20 bills from 1993.
Even without a key error, such bills sell for an extra $10 to $20 over their face value.
Bill Errors
Here are several other errors on bills that could boost their value:
- Misaligned Overprint: The bill’s seal and serial numbers are printed outside their intended area, sometimes overlapping with other features.
- Mismatched Serial Numbers: The bill’s serial numbers on the left and right sides do not match.
- Overly Inked Design: The bill’s design is overly dark due to too much ink being printed.
- Blank Reverse: One side of the bill is completely blank because the sheet wasn’t flipped during the printing process.

However, a “huge mistake” on the reverse could make your bill worth much more.
If you flip over your $20 note and the reverse is printed with the reverse of a $10 bill, it could be worth five figures.
Miller showed an example of such a bill that sold for $55,200.
A second bill in “worse condition” still boasted a high price tag, selling for $32,900.
“Always keep your eye out for these older-looking bills,” said Miller.
Check your change drawer as well, because you may be holding onto a highly valuable coin.
Three key features on a half-dollar could make yours worth up to $7,000.
Plus, a “marriage” detail on the front of your old penny could make it worth $20,400.
