Ranbir Kapoor is an actor who has never shied away from experimenting with different characters in his films. Be it portraying flamboyant characters in films such as Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Bachna Ae Haseeno, or nailing comedy roles in films such as Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Ranbir has done it all. Most recently, he shocked his fans and followers with the film Animal, where he played a character with extreme grey tones.
During an exclusive interview with Filmfare in 2022, the actor was asked about the different characters he has played in his films and how he reinvents himself with each character. Ranbir said that it depends on a lot of things including the director and the script. He said, “It depends on a lot of things. Firstly, a choice, your experience as an actor, the director, the script, and it’s hard work. That’s why I guess my films take a lot of time. At least for me, it takes some time to really understand the director’s mind, understand the script, text, try to understand what’s happening and so some prep work. So when you finally do something on screen, it looks real and believable, even if you are playing a Hindi film hero.”
The actor continued, “Today, the Hindi film hero has changed. My father used to tell me that we used to do 6-8 releases a year. Un men se char toh lost and discovered par tha jo end mei miljate the. But that time, the audience was more forgiving. Today, the gate opened. You have cinema from all over the world. So, you really have to be wise while you choose, and know your country, its people, and its culture. You can’t make a film for yourself. You have to make it for an audience.”
Ranbir Kapoor will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War along with Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. He will also be seen in Ramayana with Sai Pallavi.
