THREE KEY TESTS

In his video, Eric Miller (@thecoinchannel) reveals that most one cent pieces are made from steel.

Meaning, if you have a penny that doesn’t stick to a magnet, you might be in luck.

Miller said, on average, a penny should weigh 2.7 grams, but a rare penny will weigh in at around 3.1 grams.

For the third test, Millers asks viewers to look closely at their old coin.

Paying close attention to the date on the back, you might notice that the number 3 is the same length as the number 4.

If that is the case, you might have an extra special penny on your hands!

The 3 used to be the number 8 and was likely scrubbed off.

When looking at a more common penny, collectors would see that the number 3 is longer or usually “ends” past the number 4.

“If it passes all those tests, you have a penny worth over $300,000,” said Miller.

BIG FOLLOWING

Miller claims to be an ambassador for the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and has amassed a following of nearly five million on his TikTok page.

Many of his followers refer to Miller for his expertise on rare coins and notes.

Several viewers commented under the video, asking Miller where to sell their own collection of rare coins.

Others are in disbelief that rare coins like this one would sell for so much money.

“Who pays 300k for this penny,” asked one social media user.

Still, Miller urges his followers to keep an eye out for distinct markers of a rare coin that might be lost in a couch cushion somewhere.

Another rare coin that collectors hunt for is a Lincoln penny with the initials “VDB,” which stands for Victor David Brenner, a famous sculptor, engraver, and medalist.

Brenner is best known for designing the Lincoln cent and his initials go a long way in driving up a coin’s value.

Coin collectors can also look for an unusual color — a deep, voluminous red instead of a burnt copper or dull brown.

Meanwhile, Miller has let coin hunters in on another secret – what to look for in a 1960s quarter that makes it worth thousands.

And if you stumble upon a 1982 penny, you might be holding a ticket to a significant windfall.
