Former New York Yankees All-Star ace Luis Severino thought he’d never leave the Bronx. After suiting up for the New York Mets in 2024, could he be headed to an American League East rival on a multi-year deal this winter?
Severino was a top-tier producer in the Yankees’ rotation from 2017-18. He earned an All-Star Game selection and a top-10 finish in AL Cy Young Award voting in both campaigns.
However, the right-hander’s biggest problem from 2020-23 was staying healthy. He appeared in just 42 total games (37 starts) for the Bombers during that time. His final year in pinstripes resulted in a disappointing 6.65 ERA in 89 1/3 innings pitched.
That led to him signing a one-year, $13 million contract with the Mets to rebuild his value before reaching free agency again. He’s set himself up for a multi-year deal after a successful 2024 in Queens.
Severino posted an 11-7 record with a 3.91 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 161 strikeouts in 182 innings pitched. He hadn’t racked up that many innings in one season since 2018 (191 1/3).
Where could Sevy land this winter? Just Baseball’s Ryan Finkelstein is predicting he’ll sign a three-year, $51 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. This prediction also includes the hurler getting an opt-out clause that could be exercised following the 2025 season.
This type of deal would be perfect for the 30-year-old. He gets the security of a multi-year agreement but the chance to maximize earnings if he stays healthy and puts together another productive campaign. Sevy would also have more of an opportunity to face his former club, which he didn’t get a chance to do in 2024.
