Essendon cut former top-10 draft pick Sam Weideman after just 17 games

The AFL career of Sam Weideman is seemingly over after Essendon refused to offer him a new contract.

Weideman is the grandson of late Collingwood legend Murray Weideman, a team-of-the-century member and dual premiership hero.

Murray was also the acting captain of Collingwood’s famous 1958 premiership-winning team, the same side that stopped an all-conquering Melbourne from winning a fourth straight grand final in the 50s.

Ironically, Sam Weideman was drafted by the Demons with Pick 9 in 2015.

He played 59 games for Melbourne before joining Essendon during the 2022 trade period.

He managed just 17 games for the Bombers, taking his total career games to 76.

Essendon’s talent manager Matt Rosa announced Weideman’s delisting on Friday.

“I’d like to thank Sam for his contribution to Essendon over the past two seasons,” he said.

“These decisions are never easy but Sam handled it with maturity and professionalism.

“We wish Sam all the best for his future endeavors and he will always be a part of Essendon.”
