Things just got a little interesting regarding Los Angeles Rams star defender Ernest Jones IV. Early Sunday morning, it was reported that Jones received permission from the Rams for him and his representatives to look for a trade out of Los Angeles.
He has been dealing with contract negotiations with the Rams and so far, nothing has come about. But Jones just took to social media to refute the report that he asked to leave Los Angeles.
If Jones IV is to remain with the Rams, it would be a massive win for the team before the start of the season. He has become a leader on the defensive end of the field and losing him would sting.
The Rams just lost All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald to retirement this offseason so Jones IV’s presence is paramount. He and the Rams still need to come to terms on a new deal if he is to remain in Los Angeles long-term.
Jones IV put up 145 total tackles and 4.5 sacks for the Rams last season. He helped get the team to a surprising playoff berth and set the tone on defense for all.
However, like others around the league, Jones IV believes he is worth a lucrative new contract extension. The Rams would love to keep Jones IV around long-term but the two sides have to come to an agreement on a number that makes sense for all involved.
Hones himself has spoken previously about his desire to remain in Los Angeles with the Rams.
“I know that the work that I’ve put in these past three years, I know I’m worthy of something regardless what the worth may be,” Jones said, according to The Orange County Register. “… I love to be in L.A. I really want to be here. This is truly where I want to keep my family at, grow my family here. But I also know that there’s a business side of it too that I can’t truly control. We’ll see.”
The former South Carolina Gamecock has turned himself into one of the better linebackers in the NFL. He is an integral part of what the Rams do on defense and the hope is that the two sides can come to terms.
For now, the saga continues, and watching how it all plays out will be part of the fun.
