Former President Donald Trump has urged congressional Republicans not to pass a temporary government funding resolution unless it includes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
“If Republicans don’t get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday.
He further accused Democrats of attempting to manipulate voter rolls, writing in all caps: “THE DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO ‘STUFF’ VOTER REGISTRATIONS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS. DON’T LET IT HAPPEN – CLOSE IT DOWN!!!.”
The SAVE act aims to mandate proof of citizenship for voters in federal elections, addressing concerns around noncitizen voting. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has scheduled a vote on a six-month continuing resolution that includes the bill. This move is designed to avert a government shutdown while addressing election security. The legislation has drawn sharp criticism from within Johnson’s own party, making its passage uncertain.
